Quando soaram as badaladas da meia-noite que nos colocaram em 2017 acho que o que senti foi alívio. Alívio por fechar um ano como 2016. Bem sei que a passagem do ano novo não significa nada na prática mas nunca menosprezei o efeito mental de uma mudança.
2016 foi um ano acima de tudo cansativo, que conciliar trabalho full-time e trabalhos criativos em part-time com um filho pequeno não é pêra-doce, e cheio de más notícias mundiais das quais o Brexit é a que nos afecta mais directamente. Foi um murro no estômago e o rebentar da bolha. Até então sentia-me em casa em Londres e nunca pensei em mim como uma emigrante mas claro era tudo ilusão minha. Tendo crescido nos anos 80 com a entrada na Europa e a abertura das fronteiras sempre senti que qualquer outro país europeu era meu país também. Principalmente depois de viver uma experiência cultural tão distinta como o Japão, percebi que há uma base cultural comum na Europa. Que, apesar das tantas diferenças, há mesmo muito mais que nos une. Ver essa ideia ser estraçalhada por medo partiu-me o coração...
Mas reflectindo sobre o ano que passou não posso deixar de notar que houve tanta felicidade e bons momentos e é nisso que me vou focar. Partilho convosco alguns deles.

When midnight stroke on New Years Eve, relief was waht I felt. Relief for closing a year like 2016. I know new year means nothing in practice but I have never underestimated the mental effect of a change.
2016 has been a very exhausting year. Balancing full-time work and creative part-time work with a small child is not easy. It was also a year full of international bad news of which Brexit is the one that most directly affects us. It was a punch in the stomach and the burst of the bubble. Until then I felt at home in London and never thought of myself as an emigrant but of course it was all my illusion. Having grown up in the 80s when Portugal joined the EU and the opening of borders I always felt that any other European country was my country as well. Especially after living a cultural experience as distinct as Japan, I realized that there is a common culture in Europe. I really believe taht, despite the many differences, there is so much more that unites us. Seeing this idea shattered by fear broke my heart ...
But reflecting on the past year I can not fail to notice that there was so much happiness and good times and that's what I'm going to focus on. I share with you some of them:
1. Rotinas e dias normais | Routines and normal days
Nunca fui pessoa para gostar de rotinas mas em 2016 era o que mais desejava. Depois de uns anos anteriores atribulados (a vida em Londres às vezes é demasiado animada) com o nascimento do Filipe, mudanças de casa e de emprego foi bom ter um ano mais estável. Houve muitas mudanças no trabalho (Londres!) mas estamos estáveis na casa com uma senhoria impecável (uma sorte em Londres!), o Filipe adora a creche onde anda e, a cereja no topo do bolo, raramente esteve doente todo o ano! Sinto-me uma idosa a falar em estabilidade e saúde mas há tanto que pode descarrilar na vida que celebrar alguma calma na maré é bom. Este ano já promete mais agitação outra vez mas sinto-me com mais energia para continuar a aguentar o barco.
I was never a person to enjoy routines but I was craving for some in 2016. After a few troubled years (life in London is sometimes too lively) with Filipe's birth, house and job changes it was great to have a more stable year. There havestill been a lot of changes at work (London!) but we are stable in our flat with a nice landlady (not so common in London!), Filipe loves the nursery he goes to, and the icing on the cake, he was rarely sick all year! I feel like an old lady talking about stability and health but there is so much that can derail life that celebrating some calm is good. This year is promiing to be a turbulent again but I feel more energised to keep the ship afloat.
2. Viagens | Travels
Viajar, viajar sempre! Certamente uma das minhas missões na vida será a de continuar sempre a explorar o mundo! E com um pequenino na vida ainda me sinto mais motivada e quero (queremos) mesmo incutir-lhe o prazer das viagens.
Travel, travel always! For sure one of my missions in life will be to continue to explore the world! And with a little one in life I still feel more motivated and I want (we want) to instill in him the pleasure of travel.

e Cuba! | and Cuba!
Viajar com um filho é definitivamente diferente mas muito bom na mesma! O truque (para nós) é adoptar um ritmo mais vagaroso e paciente (o que honestamente é bom para todos). E a curiosidade e descontracção dos miúdos ajuda imenso a meter conversa com locais.
Traveling with a child is definitely different but still amazing! The trick (for us) is to adopt a slower, more patient rhythm (which is honestly good for everyone). And kids' natural curiosity and relax is quite helpful to strike a conversation with locals.
3. Visitas de amigos | Friends visiting
A verdade é que para além dos nosso pais não recebemos muitas visitas em Londres... Se calhar toda a gente já conhece ou não é muito entusiasmante... Mas 2016 até foi um bom ano de visitas. Grandes amigas e amigos de Lisboa estiveram por cá e até a minha amiga Leya de Seattle nos visitou, o que me deixou mesmo feliz!
The truth is that, other than our parents, we rarely have guest in London ... Maybe everyone already knows it or isn't a very interesting place... But 2016 was a good year of visits. Great friends from Lisbon have been here and even my friend Leya from Seattle visited us, which really made me happy!
4. The #100dayproject
2016 foi o ano em que consegui completar um #100dayproject! Tinha tentado em 2015 mas não terminei. Para quem não conhece, o conceito é dedicar 100 dias a um projecto qualquer (normalmente criativo mas não tem que ser) e partilhar algo todos os dias (maioritariamente no Instagram). A ideia, lançada pela Elle Luna, é criar uma prática artística diária. O foco é no processo e na partilha e não tanto na qualidade. É um exercício de persistência, consistência que ajuda muito a descobrir a nossa voz artística ou simplesmente divertirmo-nos. Pode ser feito em qualquer altura mas todos os anos há uma data de partida e é giro fazer ao mesmo tempo que outros milhares de pessoas por todo o mundo, conhecem-se artistas fantásticos e a mútua motivação ajuda muito a não desistir (100 dias não parece muito mas cuuusta!)

2016 was the year I was able to complete a # 100dayproject! I had tried it in 2015 but I didn't finish it. For those who do not know, the concept is to dedicate 100 days to any project (usually creative but doesn't have to be) and share something every day (usually on Instagram). The idea, launched by Elle Luna, is to create a creative daily practice. The focus is on the process and sharing and not so much on quality. It is an exercise in persistence, consistency that can help you discover our artistic voice or just have fun! It can be done at any time but every year there is an official starting date and it is fun to follow along thousands of people all over the world. You get to know great artists and the mutual support helps a lot not to give up (100 days doesn't seems much but it's haaaard!)

Apesar de diferentes, ambos contribuíram imenso para o meu desenvolvimento. Um trouxe-me mais confiança artística e o outro mais equilíbrio emocional. O balanço é mais que positivo. É verdade que há dias que custa, a inspiração não aparece e estamos cansados, mas mais ou menos a meio começa-se a percebr que estamos a evoluir, que as coisas estão a mudar e isso sabe mesmo bem!
Although quite different, both projects helped me a lot to grow. One brought me more artistic confidence and the other more emotional balance. The balance is more than positive. It's true that some days are hard, inspiration doesn't come, we're tired, but more or less by the time you reach the middle you start to see some evolution, that your work is changing and you're more comfortable and that's the best!
5. What would you tell your younger self?

E por último o meu projecto favorito do ano. Estou tão, mas tão orgulhosa deste projecto. Para quem não sabe este projecto começou com um pedido a amigos, conhecidos e desconhecidos para me enviarem conselhos ao seu eu mais novo. Eu depois compilei todas as mensagens que recebi e sintetizei em 12 conselhos. Escrevi tudo à mão, juntei com fotografia da minha autoria e voi lá nasceu um calendário para 2017. A resposta foi muito motivante, esgotei todos e enviei calendários para todos os cantos do mundo!
And for last my favorite project of the year. I am so, so proud of this project. For those who don't know it, this project began with a request to friends, acquaintances and strangers to send me advice to their younger self. I then compiled all the messages I received and summarized them into 12 pieces of advice. I hand lettered everything, combined it with some of my photography work and voi la', a calendar for 2017 was born. The response has been very motivating and I completely sold out and sent calendars all over the world!
