21 March 2017

looking back on 2016

(English below)

Partilho convosco alguns deles.
-------
When midnight stroke on New Years Eve,  relief was waht I felt. Relief for closing a year like 2016. I know  new year means nothing in practice but I have never underestimated the mental effect of a change.

2016 has been a very exhausting year. Balancing full-time work and creative part-time work with a small child is not easy. It was also a year full of international bad news of which Brexit is the one that most directly affects us. It was a punch in the stomach and the burst of the bubble. Until then I felt at home in London and never thought of myself as an emigrant but of course it was all my illusion. Having grown up in the 80s when Portugal joined the EU and the opening of borders I always felt that any other European country was my country as well. Especially after living a cultural experience as distinct as Japan, I realized that there is a common culture in Europe. I really believe taht, despite the many differences, there is so much more that unites us. Seeing this idea shattered by fear broke my heart ...

But reflecting on the past year I can not fail to notice that there was so much happiness and good times and that's what I'm going to focus on. I share with you some of them:

1. Rotinas e dias normais | Routines and normal days

I was never a person to enjoy routines but I was craving for some in 2016. After a few troubled years (life in London is sometimes too lively) with Filipe's birth, house and job changes it was great  to have a more stable year. There havestill been a lot of changes at work (London!) but we are stable in our flat with a nice landlady (not so common in London!), Filipe loves the nursery he goes to, and the icing on the cake, he was rarely sick all year! I feel like an old lady talking about stability and health but there is so much that can derail life that celebrating some calm is good. This year is promiing to be a turbulent again but I feel more energised to keep the ship afloat.

2. Viagens | Travels
Viajar, viajar sempre!

Travel, travel always! For sure one of my missions in life will be to continue to explore the world! And with a little one in life I still feel more motivated and I want (we want) to instill in him the pleasure of travel.

Em 2016 fomos a Berlim. In 2016 we went to Berlin....

a Portugal | to Portugal

e Cuba! | and Cuba!

Traveling with a child is definitely different but still amazing! The trick (for us) is to adopt a slower, more patient rhythm (which is honestly good for everyone). And kids' natural curiosity and relax is quite helpful to strike a conversation with locals.

The truth is that, other than our parents, we rarely have guest in London ... Maybe everyone already knows it or isn't a very interesting place... But 2016 was a good year of visits. Great friends from Lisbon have been here and even my friend Leya from Seattle visited us, which really made me happy!

4. The #100dayproject

2016 was the year I was able to complete a # 100dayproject! I had tried it in 2015 but I didn't finish it. For those who do not know, the concept is to dedicate 100 days to any project (usually creative but doesn't have to be) and share something every day (usually on Instagram). The idea, launched by Elle Luna, is to create a creative daily practice. The focus is on the process and sharing and not so much on quality. It is an exercise in persistence, consistency that can help you discover our artistic voice or just have fun! It can be done at any time but every year there is an official starting date and it is fun to follow along thousands of people all over the world. You get to know great artists and the mutual support helps a lot not to give up (100 days doesn't seems much but it's haaaard!)

Note: this year will start on April 4 and you can know everything in this link.

I did two projects: one of lettering during the official timing.

And more towards the end of the year a totally different one focused on a daily gratitude practice.

(instagram tag: #gratefulkanpai)

Although quite different, both projects helped me a lot to grow. One brought me more artistic confidence and the other more emotional balance. The balance is more than positive. It's true that some days are hard, inspiration doesn't come, we're tired, but more or less by the time you reach the middle you start to see some evolution, that your work is changing and you're more comfortable and that's the best!

5. What would you tell your younger self?

(instagram tag: #kanpaiprojectadvice)

And for last my favorite project of the year. I am so, so proud of this project. For those who don't know it, this project began with a request to friends, acquaintances and strangers to send me advice to their younger self. I then compiled all the messages I received and summarized them into 12 pieces of advice. I hand lettered everything, combined it with some of my photography work and voi la', a calendar for 2017 was born. The response has been very motivating and I completely sold out and sent calendars all over the world!

-----------

Em resumo: rotinas, família, amigos, viajar e projectos criativos! Afinal podia só ter escrito uma frase!
In summary: routines, family, friends, travel and creative projects! After all, I could have just written one sentence!

30 January 2016

around here - december 2015

December was a busy month as you would expect in an emigrant's life! Even if we do not spend Christmas in London, we brought home a tree, lights and decoration but contrary to what I expected Philip did not care at all. Next year!

On a day when the nursery was closed, he came to visit me at work.

Um dia normal no trabalho (cof cof)... visitar a futura sede da Google UK! Vistas panorâmicas dos últimos andares.

Another day at work (cof cof)... visiting Google UK future offices! Panoramic views from the top floors.

E este menino já anda pela rua!

And we're off walking on the street!

Fez-me ter saudades do Japão e agora quero visitar Hong Kong.

Excellent exhibition of Michael Wolf (well known for Tokyo Compression and Architecture of Density) -"Informal Arrangements" on daily life details in Hong Kong! It made me miss having Japan and now want to visit Hong Kong.

And around here daily life is increasingly full of hugs and kisses.

E continua cheio de livros! Sem dúvida o brinquedo preferido dele.

And still full of books! Undoubtedly his favorite toy.

A few days before Christmas we flew to Lisbon and we had a wonderful time with family and friends! However time is never enough to see everybody and do everything we want to. Still we had some relaxed days even with trips to the beach. On Christmas eve the kid was amused to delivering gifts to everyone but didn't really get the idea. Next year! :)

A cadela que enfeitiçou o Filipe. Desde então está obcecado por cães! Woof woof!

The dog who bewitched Filipe. Since then he is obsessed with dogs! Woof woof!

Com o primo na praia. Dias lindos de Inverno.

With his cousin at the beach. Beautiful winter days.

Feliz 2016 amigos!

On the last day of the year we came back home in London, a bit rested and excited to start a new year, fresh and full of blank pages to be filled! Happy 2016 friends!

07 December 2015

around here - november 2015

November was quite an emotional month. The same day Paris was attacked one of my friends in Portugal had a huge car crash and her baby daughter was delivered by emergency c-section at 28 weeks. It's a miracle she is alive and she is doing amazingly well for her tiny size showing everyone how tough the human spirit can be. There are still many bridges to cross for her but we have been celebrating every achievement for the amazing girl she already is. Across the Atlantic another friend had also a baby daughter and another friend found out she is also expecting another daughter as well. So yes, my whatsapp has been overloaded with cute pictures and stories of brave babies and its parents.

The news of Paris sent London to panic and to the sad decision to bomb Syria. I really wonder what kind of world are we leaving for our children and feel depressed that despite all the amazing human achievements we haven't found a way to get along and stop killing each other.

... and let's cue in photo of sleeping child before leaving for nursery for an abrupt change of subject...

I had another demanding month workwise with increasing responsibilities and deadlines. It's all good and I foresee a great 2016 filled with challenges and growth. While I sometimes wish my life was calmer and more predictable I really thrive with challenges. I just need to be less anxious! :))

We had a wonderful unplanned saturday that included both getting our hair cut (not the baby), a marvellous lunch at Andina and a new photobooth strip at the Tea Building. The weather suddenly changed and winter arrived in London with snow and everything (it was about 10 minutes but I was so excited - can you tell I grew up where it doesn't snow?).

We continued to meet with lots of friends at our place and out after long months of being too busy with all the changes in our life! We had some friends from Japan (now living in Belgium) over and was good to walk with them near the river and see one of my favourite views of London.

I join naphopomo and blogged more often! I had lots of more interesting posts planned but it was difficult. But at least I'm almost up to date in the Project 52 front which makes me happy (you guys are probably sick to death of my son ha ha ha). I loved reading Xanthe and Jeanine everyday and thank them for keeping me going with their example!

-------

We are in the last stretch of the year and feeling really really tired. In a couple of weeks we'll be in Lisbon for Christmas and I hope I'll be able to relax a bit more (let's hope we don't end up with an hectic schedule!). What about you guys, how was your November and what do you hope for December?

21 November 2015

around here - october 15

We're quite ahead in November and the days are really flying by. While I don't want to be moaning all the time, many days I feel frustrated with the state of the affairs and I need to adjust my expectations of how much I can actually accomplish in a day/week. Newsflash: there isn't much time left for the full time worker and parent. Some days I think I should just embrace the limitations and forget this blog, my photographic work, my creative ideas but then no I am not ready to forget this blog, my photographic work or my creative ideas. And all this sound ridiculous when we're living frightening days with terrorist attacks that are now so close that are really really scary. But for now let's look back at October...

October was a more settled month, at least compared with the previous. The flat is coming together and we also came out of our shell and started to have a social life again! We had friends over for lunches and dinners. We had a few one year old celebration party from all the babies we've met last year. We even went to Winchester! Trains! Leaving London! Yay, adventures! We met our friends Ana and Paulo in Brixton where I also met Pedro selling his lovely notebooks.

It was a VERY intense work month but I'm happy to report that I'm leaving most worries and stress behind at my desk. I'm happy at work and have felt such a shift since becoming a mother. I'm more focused, more confident and also content. I couldn't be a stay at home mum and have zero guilt about that.

O Filipe começou a andar!

Filipe started properly walking! It's amazing how fast kids develop. In two weeks after his first wobbly attempts at walking he had quit crawling and walk quite confidently.

Also he finally started sleeping through a full night consistently! Mid month we were at the verge of break down, he was sleeping so badly, waking up every hour. It was too much for our tired souls, we were exhausted bickering and angry at each other so we researched, we talked and we decided to do sleep training. Oh my gosh! It worked wonders! In three nights we was sleeping through and we just couldn't believe it! The only downside was that he started waking up earlier (6h30) and after the hour change sometimes 5h30am! Nevertheless major improvement in our life.

By the end of the month he was sick for the first time! High fever (or temperature as they say here), we got scared but was only a virus that knock him down and three days at home were enough for full recovery (fortunately it was near the weekend).

And! We went to see Beach House live! For yeaaaars we've been trying to see them and always something happens. But we made it this time and it was lovely. They played at Shepherd's Bush Empire, a beautiful venue and the sound was so good. Victoria's voice is beautiful.

Eu gosto desta altura do ano, chegar a casa sabe tão bem, beber chá, montar a árvore e ouvir canções de natal... :) Mantenham-se quentes amigos!

Today it snowed in London and suddenly became very cold. We started to see Christmas trees and the count down to Christmas has begun! I like this time of year, arriving home feels so good, drinking tea, decorating the tree and listening to carols ... :) Stay warm my friends!

19 October 2015

around here - september 2015

Belgravia Mews - some days my works takes me to beautiful places.

Argh Setembro!

Argh September! For the last 4 years September has watched major changes in our lives... In 2011 we moved to London. In 2012 we entered limbo zone, we both returned to Lisbon but I lived between London and Lisbon for months while job hunting. In 2013 after being by myself for a couple of months working in London, we rented a new flat together and in 2014 we had our first child!
I was determined to break this September cycle this year so I was so happy when we found our new flat in August. Yes! We could settle in quickly and have a relaxed September. Only noooooo, there was so much stuff to do and with a baby in tow everything takes longer (I should've known that by now!). Also the flat came only semi furnished so there was a lot of time spent searching and buying new stuff.  We had planned to buy mostly online but alas, we spent 3 weeks without internet! Argh! We transferred our service from the previous flat and let's just say they screwed it! It took many phone calls, complaints and annoyances to finally get our contact with the world wide web functioning again. In the meanwhile all our free time was spent in many trips to Argos and Ikea and local shops...

Bored baby being a champion at Ikea

It was also the first full month with our new schedules. Because of R's extreme commute (2 hours on e way) I assumed both the drop off and picking up of the baby from nursery. My boss was very accommodating to change my working hours, skipping lunch hour (I work full time = 40h/week) to make it work. And it works but my days feel like a marathon with hardly any time to breathe.

New commute and eyes on your screen all the time

I'm quite happy with my new job, it's demanding and full new challenges but exciting and feel that I will learn and grow much there. I like my commute as well. My new colleagues are nice and just feel sorry to have so little time for socialising.

The cutest!

But in september we also reached an amazing milestone: Filipe turned ONE! In some ways I can't believe we are already here but at the same time I don't feel that it flew by, it seems a long long time has passed since we started this adventure. I feel I have changed dramatically throughout this year but in the essence I'm still the same, if that makes any sense? I have changed to welcome all this love and joy for this little person, all these new feelings and emotions and at the same time there this old me, or this core me screaming don't forget about me, you're still the same person as before. Not sure if I'm making myself clear. I've been trying to reflect a lot on this but it's all a bit fuzzy in my head - maybe it's still the lack of sleep :) ...

New park just around the corner.

Ahhh September, still a very unsettled month, with many frustrations and adjustments but you know what? I will have fond memories of these days, early parenthood, fighting these challenges as a team of three and I will also be proud how we kept our spirits up and were not defeated by the difficulties and frustrations.

17 October 2015

around here - august 2015

Heart melt.

Ai!

Gosh, I'm aware that I am writing this in OCTOBER!! But I really need to share what was a really challenging month for us here in London. You may remember that the month started with the baby joining nursery and myself starting a new job. Nursery had its ups and downs and we stressed a bit on trying to figure what to. Then the nursery closed for some days and the grandparents came to the rescue to take care of the baby while we were both busy at work. All our closest family lives in Portugal and Germany and I will admit that living far away from family is sad with a little one. It filled my heart to see the play, joy and bound between Filipe and my parents!

Sunday roast!

Amazing greenhouse at Kew Gardens.

While my parents were here we went out for dinner with a group of friends all parents of children of the same age (we met in the antenatal course). The excitement of being all well dressed in Soho after nine in the evening was palpable and it was a memorable night. We had dinner here and danced here.

Another good news was a new job for my partner! One interview, one job offer. Bang! And of course "can you start immediately?". It's a great opportunity and he is loving it but has the downside of a 2 hour commute each way! Not fun at all. But it is a short term project so it is not indefinite and we are making it work.

Helping to pack!

Also, we moved flats! Our landlady decided in July to sell our flat (well the flat we were living in, it was never ours...) and after the initial shock we accepted that it was actually for the best as there are limits to until when you can share a one bedroom flat with a baby!
We started "casually" looking for a new flat but as all things London soon we were under the estate agency's pressure to pay deposit to secure flats that we weren't so sure about. London rental market is so aggressive and inhumane... if you fancy a flat that has an good price (good being highly debatable here) oyou have to move very fast to secure it. The worse is you have to pay a deposit straight away (sometimes over the phone!) that WILL NOT be returned to you if you change your mind. They won't also return it if you fail the referencing process (a bunch of checks estate agents do to ensure you are able to pay the extortionary rents) which I have no words to describe how disgusting it is. Let's just say it is a quite stressful experience. It is also disheartening... Because there is so demand, the rents are really inflated and you go aroudn looking at shabby miniscule places (and oh my how is this painful for an architect like myself) thinking so... your asking this amount... for this shithole??? Whatever, I'm ranting here... after numerous visits, some failed attempts we saw one that fitted almost every tick on our list, applied, went for an inteview with the landlady (I told you guys, competition!) and got the flat! Yahoo! In very english fashion has two floors which means lots of staircase up and down for the baby (and safety gates!). Fortunately my parents were still here when we moved so they could stay with Filipe.

Nada mal termos sobrevivido!

And this was August: nursery, two job changes of job, a home move and my parents visit. I'm so glad we survived!

around (t)here - july 2015

July was a good month! I attended a lettering workshop and spent 3 wonderful hours absorbed in brushes, ink and words. With some friends we also visited the serpentine gallery summer pavilion, this year by selgascano.

But most of the time was spent in Portugal which meant lots of family meals and of course...

... praia, muita praia!

...lots of beach time! The weather was absolutely wonderful and we were able to relax. At least a bit. As emigrants we never have enough time to see all our friends or visit our favourite and new places. This time we were also really tired (9 months of parenthood with a baby that doesn't sleep well takes it toll) but we managed to recover some sanity to our lives.

And something amazing happened! We got a night out all by ourselves! The kid stayed with the grandparents and we sneaked to Troia,  where I had actually never been. It goes without saying that it was beyond wonderful!

Vale a pena!

I had doubts about this book but read it quite quickly and really liked it. It's a feminist call for women to claim their space at top level jobs but not only. I really recommend it.

And back to London, a new life: Filipe started nursery and I prepared to go back to work.
---------

Coisa pouca portanto! Mas sabem que mais? Tudo se resolve (o meu mantra!)

And like that it's August! It is undoubtedly a busy month. I started this post still in July but we've been overwhelmed! Filipe is getting used to the nursery with its ups and downs, I started my new job, R is full of work and interviews and we have started looking for our new apartment! So a lot in our plate right now! But you know what? Everything is figureoutable (my mantra!)
