A semana passada mostrei-vos fotos de Londres da Astrid. Esta semana mostro Londres de novo desta vez pelos os olhos de outro convidado especial: O Fred Gomes do blog We Blog You. É que Londres fica mesmo bonita fotografada analogicamente. Espero que gostem tantos das fotos do Fred como eu. Muito obrigada Fred!

Last week I showed you Astrid's pictures of London. This week I'm sharing more London photos but this time captured by the lens of another special guest: Fred Gomes of We Blog You. It's that London is just beautiful in film photography. I hope you enjoy Fred's pictures as I do. Thank you Fred!

USA road trip: the train from seattle to san francisco

Para chegarmos até à Califórnia decidimos apanhar o comboio. A primeira vez que li sobre o Coast Starlight (o nome da ligação entre Seattle e Los Angeles) foi no blog Oh Happy Day e como adoro tudo o que meta viagens de comboio juntei esta à minha (longa) lista de futuras viagens. Por isso quando imaginamos esta viagem o comboio era uma certeza! Há muita gente que não aconselha esta viagem porque o comboio vai pelo interior do estado de Oregon e norte da California e não pela costa, a viagem demora uma eternidade (24h até São Francisco, 35h até Los Angeles) e a Amtrak não é muito fiável com os horários. Nada que nos demovesse portanto!

To reach California we decided to take the train. I first read about the Coast Starlight train (that's the name of the connection between Seattle and Los Angeles) through Jordan's Oh Happy Day blog and being a train travel lover marked it in my "one day..." list of travels. So when the opportunity came we jumped on board (pun intended). A lot of people say it's not really worth it because tre train goes iland through Oregon state and north California, the journey is quite long (24h to San Francisco, 35h to Los Angeles). Nothing that really bothered us!

Como viajámos com o bebé pagámos por uma cabine-cama (roomette) que era absolutamente minúscula, nem consegui fotografar. Duas cadeiras frente a frente que se transformavam numa cama e outra cama por cima tipo beliche. Tudo muito apertado mas a vantagem do comboio é que há tanto para explorar pelas carruagens. O comboio tem dois restaurantes, um bar, um cinema (que não vimos porque fomos dormir cedíssimo com o bebé) e o meu favorito uma carruagem panorâmica (foto acima) onde passei bastante tempo a ver a paisagem que era linda. Sim, não vimos vistas fantásticas sobre o oceano mas passámos por rios, campos, montanhas e eu achei a paisagem lindíssima. E há algo de meditativo em poder sentar e olhar pela janela a ver o mundo a desfilar lá fora...

As we traveled with the baby we paid for a cabin bed (roomette) in the sleeper car which was absolutely tiny, I could not even take a decent photo of it. Two facing seats that turned into a bed and one bunk bed above. All very very tight but the train's biggest advantage is that there is so much to explore. The train has two restaurants, a bar, a cinema (we didn't see because we went to sleep really early with the baby) and my favourite: an observation car where I spent some time watching the beautiful scenery. So yes, while it wasn't amazing ocean views I found the landscape really beautiful, as we rode through rivers, fields and mountains. And there is something meditative in being able to sit and look out the window watching the world go by outside ...

Para quem viaja em cabine as refeições estão incluídas e são servidas em dois restaurantes (não percebi muito bem porquê dois e porque é que um tinha muito mais escolha que o outro). A comida não era fenomenal mas é uma sensação fantástica tomar uma refeição à mesa num comboio em andamento. O pequeno-almoço enquanto o sol nascia foi mágico.

For those traveling in the sleeper car meals are included and are served in two restaurants (didn't quite understand why two and why one had much more choice than the other). The food was not phenomenal but ok and it's a fantastic feeling to dine at the table on the running train. The breakfast as the sun rose it was absolutely magical.

As camas são preparadas pela assistente de cabine enquanto jantávamos (luxo!). Como partilhei a minha cama com o bebé não dormi muito bem com o terror de o esmagar involuntariamente na cama minúscula mas achei a cama comfortável. E a verdade é que de manhãzinha quando saímos em Emeryville (estação de onde se faz a ligação a São Francisco) achei que a viagem tinha sido curta!

Beds are prepared by the cabin attendant while we were having dinner (luxury!). As I shared my bed with the baby I didn't sleep very well afraid of unintentionally crush him in the tiny bed but found the bed comfortable. And the truth is that when we left at Emeryville early in the morning (station that connects to San Francisco) I thought the journey had been too short!

Gosto muito de ver como outras pessoas vêem e fotografam a cidade onde vivo. E Londres é uma cidade fantástica para ser retratada com rolo... O céu carregado, a luz suave, os tons de terra,  essa atmosfera tão londrina consegue ser tão bem traduzida pelo rolo. E esta semana em vez de vos mostrar fotos minhas trago uma convidada especial: a Astrid Hagen do blog Hei Astrid. Assim que vi as suas fotos tiradas em Londres fiquei encantada e deixei-me apaixonar por Londres de novo! Espero que também gostem! And tusen takk Astrid!

I always love to see how others capture the city I live in and I think London is a great city to capture with film! The overcast sky, the soft light, the earth tones, that London atmosphere... they are beautifully portrayed on film. This week, instead of showing you my pictures, I'm sharing some photos I instantly fell in love with taken by Astrid Hagen from the lovely blog Hei Astrid. I look at her pictures and can't help to fall in love yet again with London. Hope you enjoy them as well! And tusen takk Astrid!

USA road trip: Seattle

A ideia era fazer uma road trip pela California mas se era para ir ao "outro lado do mundo" tínhamos que passar por Seattle para visitar a minha amiga Leya (de quem falei aqui). É um bocado estranho fazer um desvio de 1300 km (distância de Seattle a São Francisco) mas seria ainda mais estranho não fazer o esforço para vê-la e à sua família. Eu já tinha visitado Seattle há 10 anos exactamente (quando vivia no Japão) mas foi como se fosse a primeira vez. A minha memória tinha retido muito pouco.

The idea was to make a road trip through California but if we were to cross to the "other side of the world" we had to go to Seattle to visit my friend Leya (I told you about here). It's a bit strange to take a detour of 1300 km (distance from Seattle to San Francisco) but it would be even stranger not make the effort to see her and her family. I had already visited Seattle 10 years before exactly (when I lived in Japan) but it was like the first time. My memory had retained very little.

Os primeiros dias foram passados devagar, a recuperar do cansaço da viagem e jet lag (mínimo comparado com o regresso a Londres!). A Leya e sua família vivem em Green Lake, uma zona residencial perto de um parque com um lago enorme. Deliciei-me com as casas de madeira com alpendres e as árvores em flor de início de primavera. Passeámos à volta do lago que me fez tanto lembrar Oslo e o lago Sognsvann, perto do qual vivia.

The first days were spent slowly recovering from the long journey and jet lag (minimal compared to the return to London!). Leya and her family live in Green Lake, a residential neighborhood near a park with a huge lake. I delighted myself with the wooden houses with porches and blossoming trees. We walked around the lake that reminded me of Oslo and the lake Sognsvann, near which I used to live.

Mais recuperados lançámo-nos para o centro e mostrei ao R. um dos meus edifícios favoritos: a biblioteca central pública de Seattle desenhada pelos OMA/Rem Koolhaas. É uma obra incrível e é uma biblioteca incrível, enorme, cheia de espaço e livros! Passeámos pelas avenidas, vimos as vistas do alto da Columbia Tower, Pioneer Square e visitámos também o Public Market um misto de atracção turística e mercado a sério.

More recovered we headed to downtown and showed R. one of my favourite buildings: Seattle's central public library designed by OMA/Rem Koolhaas. It's an amazing building and an incredible library, huge, full of space and books! After we left we walked the streets,  saw the views from the top of the Columbia Tower, Pioneer Square and also visited the Public Market, a lovely place, a mix of tourist attraction and a real market.

Outro dia atravessámos o Puget Sound até Bainbridge Island. Adoro viagens de barco urbanas e ver uma cidade assim à distância na água é sempre mágico. Não tirei fotos em Bainbridge porque estava demasiado ocupada a deliciar-me com as sandwiches do Hitchcock, gelados e cafés!

Another day we crossed the Puget Sound to Bainbridge Island. I love urban boat trips and to see a city from the distance reflecting in the water is always magical. I didn't take photos in Bainbridge because I was too busy delighting myself with the Hitchcock sandwiches, ice cream and coffee!

Em Seattle chove bastante e eu claro escolhi o pior dia para ir ver as cerejeiras em flor no campus da Universidade de Washington. Apesar da molha monumental que apanhei fiquei feliz porque as árvores estavam lindas. No mesmo dia visitámos também o Experience Music Project num edifício pouco inspirado do Frank Gehry e gostei bastante da exposição sobre os Nirvana (que caso não saibam são de Aberdeen, uma terra muito perto de Seattle).

It rains a lot in Seattle and of course I had to choose the worst day to go and see the cherry blossoms on the University of Washington campus. Despite being amazingly soaked wet I was so happy because the trees were truly beautiful. On the same day we had also been to the Experience Music Project an uninspired project by Frank Gehry and quite liked the exhibition on Nirvana (which were from Aberdeen, a town very close to Seattle).

E acima de tudo passámos muito tempo aconchegados em casa com os miúdos, a jogar Catan (sou totalmente viciada) e a comer refeições caseiras com vinho português. Já tenho saudades!

And above all we spent a lot of time huddled at home with the kids, playing Catan (I am totally addicted) and eating home-cooked meals with Portuguese wine. I already miss it!

Foi um Verão incrível, estranho, solitário. Com um emprego temporário não conseguia arranjar casa e passei o Verão a ocupar os quartos vazios dos amigos em férias, os sofás ou colchões insufláveis nas salas dos amigos não em férias e quando isso não dava, uma cama num hostel. Vivi em muitas zonas diferentes de Londres o que adorei, claro. Tornei bairros estranhos em familiares. Passei muito tempo comigo mesma. Aprendi que sou muito resiliente e combativa. E comovi-me com a onda de apoio que recebi dos meus amigos. Nunca esquecerei que quando foi preciso eles estavam lá.

It was an amazing summer, strange, lonely. With a temporary job could not rent a flat so I spent the summer in the empty rooms of friends on vacation, sleeping on couches or air mattresses in the rooms of friends not on vacation and when that didn't work in a hostel bed. I lived in many different areas of London which I loved, of course. Foreign neighbourhoods became familiar. I spent a lot of time on my own. I learned that I am very resilient and combative. And I was moved with the outpouring support I received from my friends. I will never forget that when I needed they were there.

porto beautiful 3D tiles

Fiquei encantada com a quantidade de azulejos em relevo se conseguem encontrar pelas ruas do Porto. Não são lindos?

Tiles are a huge tradition in Portugal and you can find them pretty much everywhere. But in Porto I was happy to spot so many of this less common 3D style tile. Aren't they gorgeous?

Há uns tempos rumei ao porto para passar o fim-de-semana com uma das minhas melhores amigas que trocou a vida lisboeta pela nortenha. Não a censuro, o Porto é tão bonito e cada vez que lá vou vejo mais cafés e bares lindos, mais lojas especiais. E depois o centro tem aquela dimensão ideal em que se pode ir a pé para todo o lado sem cansar. Foram uns dias bem passados que deram até para finalmente conhecer a Ana, depois de tanta ligação cibernética. Deixo-vos algumas fotos para vos deixar com vontade de lá ir.

Some time ago I headed to Porto to spend the weekend with one of my best friends who decided to exchange her lisbon life for porto. Can't blame her. Porto is a beautiful city, the second largest in Portugal, with the perfect size to walk around without getting tired. Each time I go there I find nicer cafés and more special shops. I had a wonderful time and even got to meet Ana, after all our internet connections. I leave with some pictures to tease you to visit.

Arriving to Porto by train is one of the best parts of the trip. I love that concrete bridge.

It was a beautiful warm day and the view from my friend's office was simply amazing.

Os prédios velhos, abandonado que "caem sozinhos" são um problema no Porto. Embora se veja muita recuperação, sente-se que ainda há muito muito trabalho pela frente.

Old, falling apart buildings are a huge problem in Porto (in the wall it's written "it fell by itself"). While a lot is being done, feels that so much is still there to be made.

Finalmente fui visitar também os Empreendimentos SAAL na Bouça do Siza. Fiquei com alguma inveja daquelas casas tão especiais. Estavam a preparar-se para o S.João, a grande festa da cidade.

And finally I got to visit Álvaro Siza's buildings in Bouça. It was a bit envious of those very special houses. They we're getting ready to celebrate S. João, the city's annual party!
